Vijai is a professional designer and a senior faculty member at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, India. He is also a member of the Policy and Planning Committee of NID. He has led and given impetus to a number of activities at the NID including outreach, education, research, publications and international programmes. He is founder of the ‘International Center for Indian Crafts’ set up at NID. He has helped a number of business enterprises for domestic as well as export sectors, contributing strategic design, product development and diversification, and implementation in the diverse areas of design. Four national seminars and an international conference on design education, DETM 2005 are to his credit. He has authored several papers on design and served on the jury panels of design competitions. Vijai is also a Visiting Research Fellow to University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. His two major publications are, "Indian Saris: Traditions-Perspectives-Design" and "Design Education: Tradition and Modernity".
